The Tax Collector 2020 Movie – Storyline :

David Cuevas is a family man who works as a gangland tax collector for high ranking Los Angeles gang members. He makes collections across the city with his partner Creeper making sure people pay up or will see retaliation. An old threat returns to Los Angeles that puts everything David loves in harm’s way.

Review of The Tax Collector (2020 Movie):

I really wanted to like this even more, but it just feels so uneven. There are many things that I do like about this (outside of the over the top performance by Shia that is). But there are also many things that while I understand, they just don’t work as well as the movie thinks they do – like the help towards the end of the movie. It is set up in a way during the movie, but it still feels … detached from it.

David is a family man and one that would do absolutely anything for his family. David goes nowhere without his right hand man Creeper, the two have careers one wouldn’t call conventional. Employed by local crime lord by the name of ‘The Wizard’ working as ‘tax collectors’ in Los Angeles. The job entails working as the gangs enforcers, where they travel around the city making collections while forcing clients to pay up by any means necessary. Many collections are met with violent encounters as a display of power is always required. When an old nemesis of David and Creeper’s boss by the name of Conejo resurfaces, and is out for revenge to seize and and upend the business. This threat proves to be more than just a nuisance and really hits close to home with David forcing him to put up or shut up in order to preserve the world he created. The movie is quite hellbent on displaying violence. The really gruesome things are mostly not shown up close. There is one scene though that … well some would say is in your face – pun very much intended.

Not sure how much you can connect with the main character (not Shia, he’s the sidekick of sorts). Depending on that, will determine how invested you’ll be. Not a bad movie by a long shot, just not as mad and good as I expected it to be.
